What type of Karate do you teach at Bennati’s Martial Arts?

We teach Isshin-Ryū Karate, which is a style of karate from Japan’s Okinawa region.

It was founded by Tatsuo Shimabuku in 1956. Isshin-Ryū Karate is largely a synthesis of the Japanese arts of Shorin-ryū karate, Goju-ryū karate, and Kobudō.

How does the two-week trial work?

Our two week trial equates to four free classes. An interested trial student would choose their two select days and times each week and Bennati's would schedule them accordingly. No payment is necessary, and there is no pressure to join. We just want you to try us before you decide to enroll. All trial students will need to fill out a necessary waiver and are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing during their trial. A uniform (called a gi) is included upon enrollment. A trial student may enroll at any time during their trial, and many often do.

How much does it cost to attend monthly karate classes?

With a one-time new-student initiation fee of $40, which includes membership with the Okinawa Isshinryu Karate Kobudo Association, the official Isshin-Ryū Karate organization we are registered with, our Standard Program is $159 per month, and includes two classes a week. For those with an interest in a more flexible schedule our Flex Program is $179 per month providing a student with unlimited classes each week plus the flexibility to come to any class time regardless of whether it is waitlisted or not. Note that the Flex membership is limited - so be sure to ask about its availability. We also have package deals available for both our Standard and Flex programs at a discounted rate.

What are the additional fees?

New students will need to purchase hand gear, and once they become sparring eligible they will need to complete their sparring set. Adults will need their own bag gloves. Down the line and upon advancement to weapons at Green Belt (ages 8 & up and up only) students will need to purchase their own weapons (Bo and Sai). Besides optional (but encouraged) Tournaments, our pricing is all-inclusive. We sell each of these items at our proshop located in the Dojo.

Where do I get the uniform and how do we earn our first belt?

We provide your first white uniform, called a GI, FREE upon sign up. New students on trial periods may wear any comfortable gym clothing. For the conscious effort of attending your first class, you will receive your white belt, called an OBI to wear immediately there-after. Kids earn their white belts by helping out at home and practicing good life skills.

How do I sign up?

What age can kids start training?

Our Tiny Tigers class is geared for ages 4-5, however we will evaluate children at age 3 1/2. Evaluation does not guarantee enrollment. A good rule of thumb is if they aren't potty trained yet - they aren't ready for structured karate classes.

My child is currently in a class that they recently "aged out" of - do they move on to the next age group?

Unless explicitly instructed by a Sensei a student must successfully graduate their active program to move up to the next age group.

What if we miss a class or have vacation time? Does your schedule offer time to make up for illness and other absences?

We know life happens. If you are unable to make a class you are welcome to make it up. Make-up classes may also be scheduled via our online scheduler found in the drop-down menu under 'Student Resources'. Be sure to make up classes as soon as possible to stay on track.

What happens when we advance and need additional equipment like sparring gear, protection, and accessories or gear bags?

We are your direct vendor for all of your high-quality, safety approved sparring gear and accessories. We keep most items readily in-stock, or will order your custom and specialty items as needed from our suppliers such as Century, Shock Doctor, and Swift. Just stop by the front desk anytime. As you or your student advance, earned patches and belts are included in tuition and will automatically be timely and symbolically presented.

How do students rank up?

A student will pass testing based on their instructor’s careful discernment.

Last but not least, the "How long does it take to get a Black Belt?" question.

Each individual has a unique Martial Arts journey. To ensure both a rewarding as well as enriching journey, students must be consistent in their training. There is no “break” from the Martial Arts. Consistent attendance will ensure that students are ready for testing. Regular practice at home promotes synergistic body and mind memory. Lack of attendance and practice will lead to a much longer, sporadic, and often unmotivated journey.
